Myths and facts about women's health - Menarche to menopause 24th November 2024
On 24th November we had a very informative talk about women's health by Dr Shruthi Arasikumar (Senior Registrar, Obs & Gyn) It was well-attended hybrid gathering with number of people, from ages 10 years to 60+ years, in person and online. Puberty and periods were covered during the session with more to come on peri-menopause and menopause. Discussions around how our body changes during puberty, the myths and the realities were addressed with active participation from the audience. Topics such as period pain, how it can be treated (with pain relief, yoga, light exercise etc), blood loss, menstrual cup, pads and tampons were covered - which led to the discussion around what is environmentally friendly. There was a demonstration on how similar the shape of uterus is to a pear and how it enlarges to accommodate a baby which was interesting and informative. Covering such a large topic where there are lots of facts intermingled with myth garnered a lot of questions which shows that we need to make talking about women's health and normalise puberty, periods, perimenopause and menopause.
