On Sunday 3rd August we held an event to celebrate Windrush Generation. Thank you all who attended, supported and participated in the event. The discussions following the reading was poignant, our elders spoke about their experiences of coming over to UK and the trials, tribulations and triumphs. Whether they came over by choice or because circumstances forced them to come over the stories had a commonality. We have come a long way from where we were as there is growing awareness in the community, the work starts from speaking up, educating and lifting each other. We also heard from our local South Wales police representatives about their experiences. The event started with a Welcome note from Chair of IWAW Sandhya Saldana. Guest speaker Ramatoulie Manneh from Gambia Wales Association, Cardiff spoke about the Windrush Generation and what it means to is now. Detective Sargent Krishna Chauhan spoke about her parents experiences after they came to the UK and growing up as a 2nd generation child and how names matter. Labour Councillor Julie Sangani spoke about representation at a higher level to make a difference. Lovely poetry reading by Ankita (co-project lead for IWAW Karuna group) and interpretive dance by her daughter. Book reading by IWAW book club project lead Maithreyi and book club member Ashita. Voices of Windrush Generation is the book that was read, it is written by David Matthews. An amazing dance workshop by IWAW cultural project leads Salma, Chaitali and Teju.
